Cheikh Diop

Cheikh comes from the HLM 5 district of Dakar, Senegal. He is a master drummer and watching him play with such speed and energy sometimes leaves you breathless!

As well as djembe, the traditional African hand drum, Cheikh also plays tama (talking drum) with it's stirring and distinctive sound, sabar, played with one hand and one stick and dun dun, the base of the rhythm.
As if that wasn’t enough, Cheikh is also an accomplished dancer. He has played with several groups in Dakar and teaches workshops to visiting
students from many countries.

He is a skilled craftsman and makes and repairs all styles of drums as well as other traditional African instruments. Cheikh runs his own shop in Dakar selling drums that he has made alongside African arts and crafts.
He is now living in the UK.

Arona Lo

Arona comes from the HLM 1 district of Dakar, Senegal. He is a master drummer who has taught a variety of traditional African instruments for many years in his native Senegal and more recently in the UK, where he now lives.

His real passion is playing the dun dun or bass drums that create the heartbeat of each rhythm. Playing up to eight of these drums at once creates a mesmerising sound and spectacle for any audience. Arona also enjoys teaching and performing the traditional songs that accompany the drumming rhythms, explaining to us their origins and meanings. Personally, we think he has an incredible voice.

It can actually make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

Oumar Sagna

Oumar comes from the Colobane district of Dakar, Senegal. He is a fantastic dancer, happy with both contemporary and traditional styles. He has established himself as a respected artiste working with well known choreographers in several Dakar ballets.

His performance of the Thiakaba, a dance performed on stilts, has audiences enthralled. This specialised dance is performed either on tall stilts on two legs, or on slightly shorter stilts but one-legged!
Oumar also eats fire and this makes an exciting addition to his repertoire especially during night performances. He is at present working hard to perfect his Koumpo and limbo dancing. Oumar is an accomplished drummer too.

As if he needed any more strings to his bow, he is a skilled maker and repairer of drums and has appeared in several television films in his home country.
Oumar now lives in the UK.
